Moving Toys Workshop

WHAT IS “MOVING TOYS”?

Moving Toys is a KS2 Design & Technology
practical activity in which the pupils learn about controlling movement with a cam mechanism as part of a simple toy. They investigate a collection of moving toys containing cam mechanisms that produce different movements. The children use a range of tools and processes to develop techniques in cutting, shaping and joining to extend their making skills and produce a working model. The workshop is best done in the school hall. It is most appropriate for Years 5 and 6.

WHY DO IT IN OUR SCHOOL?

The aims of the SETPOINT Herts team are for your children to gain an understanding of how cam mechanisms can be used to produce movement. They are shown an example of the toy to be made and have
the characteristics of each component part explained to them before making it. They are encouraged to measure accurately and use tools properly. Each child should succeed in making his/her own moving toy, which they can keep.

WHAT DO WE GET?
A whole day in school involving a 2½ hour workshop for each of two classes, with all materials and equipment provided is offered through HCSF sponsorship at only £250 per day, including travel.

A minimum of 4 adult helpers plus the class teacher will be needed.
