Sponsored by the DTI

Aspects of literacy, design and technology and science are explored in a fun, imaginative and hands-on way. This workshop offers Yr2 - 4children the chance to take aspects of a story to launch (sorry!) into making a moving rocket picture and communicate using electrical circuits.

WHAT IS “MOONDUST ON MY SOCKS”?

Suitable for Y2 to 4
Each workshop has three sections and lasts 1 ½ hours. Moondust on my Socks’ is a short story especially written for this workshop. Eric and Milly dream of flying to the moon. As they gaze into the sky a spaceship lands nearby. Eric is after it in a flash…

Design and Technology
Children will then make a sliding picture of a rocket taking off from Earth and landing on the Moon. Partially prepared, this part of the workshop encourages creativity in art and practical ‘paper engineering’. This could later be adapted in many different ways.

Electrical Circuits
Mobile phones don’t work in space, postmen don’t go into orbit – so how can Eric and Milly stay in touch with their alien friend? Using aspects of QCA Science units 2F and 4F, children build a circuit to light a bulb. Once a coding system has been developed, the circuit is then used to send messages across the classroom.

A whole day of workshops in your school.

Three complete workshops can be run in a day for each of three classes of up to 32 children. All equipment and materials will be provided. Workshops are offered at a minimal price of £250 through sponsorship from the HCSF.

Four adult helpers plus the class teacher will be needed for each workshop.
