Junior Engineers for Britain K'Nex Challenge (JEB) 2012

The aim of the K’nex Challenge is to provide primary school children with an introduction to the exciting world of engineering and technology in a fun and educational way. The local challenge, organised by SETPOINT Hertfordshire, is run for KS2, Years 5 and 6 as a classroom activity for approximately 36 pupils and is suitable for children of all abilities. Schools may enter 2 classes with challenges taking place in the morning and afternoon. The maximum number of children we can accommodate in total is 72 per school. The challenge requires the pupils to work in pairs and involves them in building a design solution to a problem that is given to the children on the day. The challenge encourages the pupils to develop and demonstrate their problem solving skills, their imagination, creativity and ingenuity as well as early project management skills. The pupils start the challenge by drawing their ideas first and then building their solution, adapting their initial designs as they learn what works and what doesn’t! The challenge is delivered by a trained engineer, who will come to your school on the allocated date. They will bring along all of the K’nex kits required to run the challenge. At the end of the session all of the models will be judged and the winning model will be photographed. When all of the schools registered have taken part in the challenge, one school will be selected to go through to the National Final, normally run in Sept. Further details can be found on the YE website http://www.youngeng.org/index.asp Once you have registered your schools interest, you will be added to the list. In January you will receive confirmation of the date and details of the allocated engineer. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to allow schools to choose their own dates, as the kits need to go around Hertfordshire in a systematic way. If however the date allocated is not convenient, please contact the office and we can try and offer an alternative. If you are new to the K’nex Challenge, we will try to allocate you an engineer. If however you have a teacher/helper/parent/governor who is CRB cleared and keen to run this challenge please enter their details on the form. We will then get in contact and invite them along to the training session held in February. Please note that the K’nex Challenge is initially provided ‘free of charge’ to all schools, with our engineers providing their time voluntarily. After the challenge you will be invoiced a small fee of £45 to help towards the cost of administration and travel.
