FLIGHT ONE Workshop
WHAT IS FLIGHT ONE?
Flight One is a KS1 Science & Technology workshop in which the children make and investigate a spinner which replicates the action of a sycamore seed. They construct a simple helicopter rotor and carry out experiments using different shapes, sizes and numbers of rotor blades.
The workshop is most suitable for years 2 and 3 and is best done in the classroom with access to the school hall or playground for testing.
WHY DO IT IN OUR SCHOOL?
It is a fun activity in which the children consider how nature has utilised the principle of flight in dispersing seeds. They investigate the flying action of their spinners, making alterations to see if they can make them behave differently and duly record their observations.
Throughout the mostly practical sessions, pupils are encouraged to mark and cut out accurately and to use the tools properly.
WHAT DO WE GET?
A whole day in a school involving a 2-hour workshop for each of two classes, with all materials and equipment provided is offered at a minimal cost through sponsorship click here for current prices. All the worksheets in this workshop are left for the school to keep for follow-up work.
