These specially bred (but non-GM) plants complete the entire life cycle from seed
to seed in 35 days, and are therefore an ideal resource for the primary curriculum.
The activities are introduced through a scenario of a company requesting research into plant growth. Each child:Grows a fast plant which they pollinate using dead bees,Carries out germination and growth tests, Investigates the role of water in plants, Dissects flowers and learns about fertilisation and seed dispersal, using the fast plants and other varieties which are grown in the classroom.
Light banks are left in school for classes to carry on investigations before and after the sessions. Detailed instructions for the care of the plants are left and systems are set in place for the collection of data.
Although science-based, with the main objective being developing skills and knowledge in plant science and investigation, there is also an element of literacy to the activities.
