Crazy Creature Competition

A fun, practical Science & Technology competition for

Hertfordshire primary school children to take part in

during National Science and Engineering Week 2010

Fantastic Creature-related Prizes to be won such as:

A little something for the winning pairs

A visit to your school from the Raptor Foundation

Contribution towards a class trip to the Natural History Museum @ Tring

Adopting an animal at Paradise Wildlife Park

A visit to your school from the Bug Man

A visit to your school from Whipsnade zoo

(only available to schools within 1h drive of the zoo)

The Challenge:

Create your own Creature from the past, present, future, or even from another world!Use a given number of card squares of different sizes (templates will be provided)Use only pritt-stick style glue to make your creature, and only pen/pencil to decorate so it can be recycled afterwards (no paint, sellotape, paperclips etc)Take no longer than 1 hour (not including square-cutting)

How to manage the competition in your school:

Register your interest in taking part in the competition by emailing us (see below) This challenge is most suitable for KS2 children but you may be able to involve KS1 if the square-cutting is done for them.Organize each class into pairs (or you could do the challenge in a breakfast, after school or Science/Technology club – the challenge counts as one task for a CREST Star Investigators Award).Run the competition during National Science and Engineering Week 2010 in each class to choose winning pairs; you can base your choice on best engineered, most imaginative, most life-like and so on.Select one overall winner for your school from the class winnersEmail photo entries to admin@setpointherts.org.uk by the 1st April 2010 to enter the competition

Please register by emailing admin@setpointherts.org.uk marking your message “Creature Crazy” and we will then send you the competition pack including hints & tips and templates.

We will also email you to remind you to hold your competition during National Science and Engineering Week 2010, and again to send in your entries by the deadline so your school will be included in the judging.

Judging will take place on April 22nd 2010 and winners will be notified as soon as possible afterwards to arrange the prizes.
