On Friday 16th July, schools from around the region (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) gathered at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford on for the Big Bang Eastern Fair. We had over 400 pupils, >50 teachers, and >100 volunteers from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) industry and research across the region. Over 100 school STEM projects were exhibited by the children and judged for top prizes and nominations to the National Big Bang event next year in March. The winners have now been announced and can be found here www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/eastengland. The event was sponsored by a range of top local STEM companies and institutions – see http://www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/eastengland/sponsors.cfm. Many organisations also came to exhibit at the fair, from the BloodHound SSC project to the University of East Anglia.
As well as the competition, the day included a presentation by Lucy Hawking (Stephen Hawking’s daughter) and a really exciting show from the ‘Naked Scientists’, along with hands-on activities inspired by the Big Bang theme, and a chance to explore the Imperial War Museum, Duxford before the Awards Ceremony in the afternoon.
This event was being organised by three local educational charities: STEM Teams Cambridgeshire and Essex and SETPOINT Hertfordshire, whose aim is to provide inspirational experiences for young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
