Balloon Buggies is a KS2 Design & Technology practical activity in which the pupils have the opportunity to investigate factors affecting the movement of a balloon-powered buggy. Initial investigations are with lego, then the children use a range of tools and processes to realise their own designs in wood and plastic. The workshop is best done in the school hall. It is most appropriate for Years 5 and 6.
The aims of the SETPOINT Herts team are for your children to think about sources of power for mechanisms – to explore balloon power and to think of restrictions on their design imposed by the balloon. They are encouraged to measure accurately and use tools properly. Each child should succeed in making his or her own buggy (which he/ she keeps) and there will be a fun race to finish the session.
